Holiday Athletes
It’s late December and many people around the world are enjoying holiday parties, good food and drinks, while sharing stories with family and friends. Some may be out shopping, or living their digital best lives online, or just winding down the year with some well-deserved time away from work and school. Many will undoubtedly be watching a multitude of college and pro sports events, including big-ticket bowl games, top hoops matchups, and the Winter Olympics this year. But how about the athletes?
Athletes will be playing, practicing, and traveling, while the rest of the world watches them perform on the global stage. Pro and college athletes will miss many of the family gatherings and holiday meals due to the heavy schedule of games during this time of year. Some may be lucky enough to have family travel to their games and celebrate with them at a hotel or local establishment near the venue. These celebrations and the comradery with teammates helps, although it’s not quite the same as being ‘home for the holidays.’
Sports teams and players aren’t the only ones putting others ahead of themselves during this special time of year. Several facets of society also make huge sacrifices during the holidays, such as military, law enforcement, healthcare, emergency services, transportation, retail, food and beverage industries. All of these sacrifices are greatly appreciated and often taken for granted. We are thankful for your service
and sports would not be possible without you.
The difference with sport is that it’s a luxury rather than necessity... distinctly different from safety and medical functions or even basic needs like eating and drinking. Yes, it’s important to maintain physical/mental fitness and sports serve that purpose to the highest degree, but there are other ways to address those needs. Sport brings so much more to the table and ignites the human spirit during a time when it’s greatly needed. This can be attested by the many sporting event cancellations over the past two years and subsequent societal craving for games to attend and watch. Athletic competition and associated media coverage is a great privilege, no matter what aspect you’re participating in... be it a player, broadcaster, family member, friend, or fan... and we are grateful for it.
For our final BallaBloc Buzz article of 2021, we want to shine a light on ‘Holiday Athletes’ who dedicate their time, expend their energy, and sacrifice the joy of holiday traditions to make everyone else’s holidays more enjoyable. To all of the athletes, coaches, teams, trainers, networks, and anyone involved in making holiday sports festivities a reality...
THANK YOU AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS... LOOKING FORWARD TO AN AMAZING 2022!
